The chairman of the European Glyphosate Task Force says they expect there will be a vote of EU states as discussions continue in the coming weeks for the re-approval of glyphosate.

Earlier this week, no vote was taken by the EU Standing Committee because of concerns about glyphosate’s consumer and environmental safety from France, Italy, the Netherlands and Sweden. But Task Force Chair Richard Garnett issued a statement saying the European approval process for pesticides is rigorous and transparent.

He said the four-year process involved the assessment of more than 3,000 peer-reviewed studies by EU members and the European Food Safety Authority.

Monsanto, the maker of Roundup, whose primary ingredient is glyphosate says U.S. studies back up the safety of the product. A World Health Organization agency (IARC) claims glyphosate probably causes cancer but it’s findings have been disputed in both the U.S. and Europe.
