SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb.—So far, processing conditions have been nearly perfect as Western Sugar Cooperative winds down its 2015 campaign. High quality, accompanied by extremely good weather make this one of the best, according to Jerry Darnell, Western’s south region agriculture manager.

“It’s one of the better years we’ve ever had,” Darnell said. “Cold weather has been good for the beets, so we’ve had great storage conditions, and the factory is doing a good job of processing.”

Darnell said the last beets from the Ginn receiving station will be delivered to the factory this week. That will leave only those at Hemingford and Kimball to be brought in before those in the Scottsbluff yard are processed.

The 2015 crop has been exceedingly good, coming in at 28 tons per acre, with a 17.8 percent sugar content, Darnell said.

The co-op held its annual shareholders’ meeting Jan. 27 at the Loveland, Colo., Embassy Suites. Western President and CEO Rodney Perry reported on the expansion projects underway at the Fort Morgan, Colo., facility, as well as at Scottsbluff.
