Food safety and environmental advocacy groups are lashing out at the FDA’s approval of genetically engineered salmon.

The Center for Food Safety says it plans to sue the FDA over its decision. The organization calls AquAdvantage salmon a “dangerous contaminant” and says the FDA “has neglected its responsibility to protect the public."

A spokesperson for Food & Water Watch says they will lobby Congress to roll back the FDA approval. They’ll likely have the support of Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, who says she is “livid” over the FDA’s action.

Murkowski says she opposed the approval, “both for the health of Americans and the sustainability of our fisheries." She has introduced both a bill and provision in the appropriations process to mandate the labeling of genetically engineered salmon, which she refers to as “Frankenfish."
