TORRINGTON, Wyo. (AP)—The annual sugarbeet harvest has gotten underway in southeast Wyoming.

Jerry Darnell is Western Sugar Cooperative's South Region agricultural manager.

Darnell tells the Torrington Telegram that the harvest normally begins about a week earlier but has been delayed this year because of the unusually warm temperatures.

So far, he says the beets coming in to the Torrington processing plant have an average sugar content of 16.6 percent, which is a little above average.

Darnell says Western Sugar is expecting to process 600,000 tons of beets in Torrington.

Asked if this would be the last campaign for the Torrington plant, Darnell answered it is still too early to know.

Western Sugar announced earlier it will be reducing its Torrington operations to sugar storage and shipping.
