Close to 70 members of Congress have signed a letter by Missouri Congresswoman Vicki Hartzler expressing concern about the U.S. Dietary Guidelines Committee’s recommendations the lawmakers say wrongly took sustainability into account.

The letter, sent to the US Agriculture Secretary and the Health and Human Services Secretary says the committee’s “recommendation on lean red meat directly contradicts years of peer reviewed scientific research on the benefits of lean red meat as a high quality source of protein in a healthy diet.”

Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack has said he will follow scientific recommendations having to do with nutrition only, not outside factors such as sustainability.
