The beet sugar industry is adding a national spokesperson and blogger to talk about the safety and need for genetically engineered (GE) food.

Laura Rutherford, of Grafton, N.D., spoke about ways in which women can respond to anti-biotech activists and clarify the issue of GMOs.

Rutherford is a wife, mother and marathon runner.

“My name is Laura, and I live in a little house on the prairie,” Rutherford said. “I’m also a ninth-generation farmer.”

She explained how women in the sugarbeet industry can engage and tell their story.

“If you say non-science fast enough, it becomes nonsense,” Rutherford said of the misinformation being spread about GE food.

More information about Rutherford’s soon to open blog will appear in future issues.

“North Dakota’s got a fabulous spokesperson,” said Luther Markwart, ASGA executive vice president. “We want one in every sugarbeet producing state.”
