A GMO labeling bill that would allow for voluntary labeling of food products has been reintroduced in Congress.
The American Feed Industry Association says it supports the measure because it’s a federal food labeling solution “that consumers can rely on.
The AFIA says the bill “recognizes the safety of ingredients produced by modern agricultural biotechnology.”
The Organic Consumer Association argues the bill will “take way the right of states to require GMO labeling and will “legalize the routine industry practices of labeling genetically engineered foods as natural or all natural.”
National Corn Growers Association President Chip Bowling says farmers agree with consumers on the “need for clear, consistent labeling.”
Chip Bowling, a Maryland farmer, says “Labels should be science-based and uniform in all 50 states” as this legislation calls for.
The bill is cosponsored in the U.S. House by Kansas Republican Mike Pompeo and North Carolina Democrat G.K. Butterfield.
