A bill introduced in the state Legislature of Maine would require labeling of foods with GMO ingredients—removing a stipulation from a previous GMO labeling bill.

In 2013, Maine lawmakers passed a bill that would require such labels only if five contiguous New England states would pass similar legislation. Vermont did pass such a law, set to go into effect in 2016 but it is being challenged in court. Connecticut also passed a GMO labeling bill but it has a similar trigger clause as Maine’s legislation.

The head of the Organic Consumers Association and Organic Consumers Fund said they believe they can win in Maine, Massachusetts and Rhode Island this year but only by committing resources “to counter the inevitable attack we will face in those states by Monsanto and the Junk Food Giants.”
