New products can’t get to market for growers without science—but a CEO says acceptance is also needed.

Jim Blome, president and CEO of Bayer Crop Science, says critics of biotechnology say ‘well that’s your science.' He tells Brownfield, it’s about science. Period.

“Science is a hard core black and white issue. We will follow that science, good or bad, wherever it goes. We kill projects every day when the science and the results come out and that’s not where we need to be.”

Further, Blome says it gets confusing when consumers stand in line for the latest smart phone technology but won’t accept what’s been approved for food production…

“We have to figure out what it is we need to do in communication with younger and younger people who are further and further removed generationally from farms and rural America and to make them comfortable that this new technology is actually very important to feeding a billion hungry people every day.”
