FALLS CHURCH, Va.—Colorado, the city and county of Denver, and Louisiana have officially proclaimed July 2014 as Smart Irrigation Month.

Gov. John Hickenlooper (Colorado), Mayor Michael Hancock (the City and County of Denver) and Gov. Bobby Jindal (Louisiana) issued formal proclamations in April recognizing the initiative.

“Colorado recognizing the month of July as Smart Irrigation Month for the third year in a row reinforces the continued importance of efficient irrigation for our industry,” said Lowell Kaufhold, president of CPS Distributors, Inc. (Westminster, Colo.). Kaufhold, who chairs IA’s Smart Irrigation Month Committee, led CPS Distributors’ efforts to obtain a proclamation in Colorado.

This is Colorado’s third consecutive year recognizing Smart Irrigation Month and Louisiana’s first year.

“We are proud to have our state become a part of this important conservation program,” said John Kavanaugh, president of the Louisiana Irrigation Association (Ruston, La.). “We view this as an ideal opportunity to educate the general public about the importance and value of utilizing smart irrigation practices.”

The Irrigation Association first launched Smart Irrigation Month in July 2005 to increase public awareness of the value of water-use efficiency and water-saving products, practices and services. The initiative is designed to:

* Educate homeowners, businesses, growers and other users about simple ways to save money and water.

* Encourage industry firms and professionals to promote smart irrigation practices and technologies to customers.

* Help water providers minimize peak water use and reduce demands on infrastructure in their communities.

* Reinforce the role efficient irrigation plays in providing real solutions to today’s water challenges.

All industry professionals and businesses are encouraged to find creative ways to participate in Smart Irrigation Month and to pursue proclamations by their state and municipal governments.
