A large share of discolored sugar sits in storage at an American Crystal Sugar factory in Hillsboro, N.D.
A blog post by the company's president and CEO, David Berg, says "no one is to blame, except maybe corporate."
Berg says this high-color sugar tastes just as good as what's normally produced. But companies who buy the sugar require color specifications. The stored sugar in Hillsboro, doesn't meet them.
There are a few reasons the sugar is the color it is. Record high sugar content in last year's beet crop and a sugar cooler that isn't large enough to handle the amount of sugar that's processed. The hillsboro cooler was installed when the factory was built in the late 1970's. Berg says the only person to blame is corporate for not getting the cooler on a list of projects for replacement.
Representatives from American Crystal Sugar don't anticipate any delays and will ship product on time.
