Senate Ag Committee chair Debbie Stabenow will convene a hearing on Wednesday, July 10 on the pending sale of Smithfield Foods to Shuanghui International of China.

Stabenow says the hearing will not only examine the proposed acquisition but also look at the government review process for such deals, their effect on food safety and the protection of U.S. technologies and intellectual property.

Smithfield Foods CEO Larry Pope will be among the witnesses testifying, additional witnesses to be announced.

Stabenow was among a bipartisan group of Ag Committee members who sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew last week requesting USDA and the Food and Drug Administration be included in the government's review of the proposed Smithfield sale.
