American Farmland Trust named its new president.

Andrew McElwaine will succeed current AFT President Jon Scholl, who announced earlier this year he would step down to teach agricultural policy at the University of Illinois.

McElwaine has worked for more than three decades in conservation, land protection, agriculture and public policy.

AFT board member John Hardin, a sixth-generation Indiana farmer said, "McElwaine demonstrates a real-world understanding of the important issues facing today's farmers."

McElwaine will begin his new role July 8.
