One of the best examples of how high school agriculture programs are changing is at Milwaukee's Harold S. Vincent High School.
The urban high school dropped its ag program decades ago but decided to revive it with a focus on urban agriculture. Starting last fall, course work was offered in urban agriculture, aquaponics, biotechnology/biofuels, botany, food science, landscape/design, urban gardening/horticulture and veterinary science. The students have access to a bee apiary, a greenhouse, a hoop house and an aquaponics operation. They also have an FFA chapter.
Case IH has jumped-in to show their support for the program by donating a couple of utility tractors and a Scout UTV. Dan Danford says the school sits on 90 acres so the equipment will come in handy.
Vincent is a school of 1,600 students on Milwaukee's northwest side.
