Australia’s first low-fat, cholesterol-free potato chip is now being produced at a new manufacturing facility in Brisbane.
Queensland Primary Industries Minister Henry Palaszczuk, who opened the new s’OK Real Potato chip facility, said Department of Primary Industries scientists helped develop the new range of potato chips in partnership with s’OK and Freer Foods Pty. Ltd.
Freer Foods invested A$4 million in the new range. The chips are regarded as Australia’s first low-fat, cholesterol-free potato chip made from real potatoes, with no substitute ingredients such as rice.
The goal was to develop a 97 percent fat-free chip that retained the flavor, texture and appearance of high-oil content products. The chips are baked rather than fried in oil like traditional chips. Regular chips contain about 33 percent fat.
Last year in Australia, snack foods worth A$530 million were consumed. Potato-based snack foods were 54 percent of the total value.
