The World Health Organization says more studies are necessary to determine the heath risks of acrylamide.

Meanwhile, McDonald’s Australia distanced itself from its U.S. counterpart over claims french fries sold in U.S. outlets contained high levels of the potentially carcinogenic acrylamide.

A McDonald’s spokesman in Sydney said there was a difference between cooking oils used. In Australia franchises use tallow while U.S. outlets use vegetable oil.

The Australian/New Zealand Health Authority said it would consider any recommendations the WHO conference made, but what people didn’t know hasn’t hurt them so far.
