High mosaic virus levels caused by last summer's drought have created a big problem for seed growers on Prince Edward Island, Can.
Many growers are asking the government to raise the virus levels while others are saying it would be a good time to clean out all seed stock and plant seed with only a 1- percent virus level.
One grower said the government will have to raise the tolerance levels or "less than half the Island potatoes will be eligible to plant"
With present restrictions, some estimate 75 percent of the seed may have to be imported. In an effort to improve the seed industry last year, government and industry set the levels at no higher than 5 and 10 percent for table stock.
A decision is expected at the end of January.
