Potato Growers of Idaho will meet Wednesday, Aug. 8, at 1 p.m. to literally determine their future course as an organization or even disband.

Dan Moss, president of PGI, said the meeting to be held at the Westcoast Hotel in Pocatello, could be the most critical meeting for PGI in its 40 years.

An open discussion will be held followed by a caucus of contract, fresh and seed growers. Votes will be taken by ballot in a closed membership meeting, Moss explained.

The Executive Committee has voted to suspend activities due to the desire of many process growers to start a separate bargaining association.

But Moss also explained that plans will also be proposed whereby PGI would continue to represent the state's growers politically and with all the state and national groups where growers' voices need to be heard.

Moss says the timing may be awkward for some but a decision must be made now so the state's potato business can proceed.
