Jon Brownell, Hooper, CO, chairman of the National Potato Promotion Board, said one of the best marketing strategies the Board can ever have is for growers to cut back on planted acres.

"The one key element in the whole equation (of marketing) is the enormous amount of planted acres nationwide. The best marketing strategies known cannot overcome the overproduction that we are currently facing."

Brownell asked the industry to, "Please do the right thing. Plant substantially fewer acres this year."

He said those on the Board believe the NPPB is making huge strides to help change the way we all view potatoes. "We all need to do our part to offer the consumers what they want and when they want it.

"Our new strategy has both short- and long-term solutions to our marketing problems," he said.
