Mexico stands firm on NAFTA regulations

As the battle continues between Mexico and the U.S., Mexico doesn't show any signs of giving in, according to a recent Just-food.com news release. Mexican trade officials have made it clear any move restricting sugar from entering the U.S. will be met with restrictions on corn entering Mexico from the U.S.

The battle started when Mexico filed a formal challenge Aug. 17, 2000 fighting restrictions on Mexican sugar and said NAFTA regulations should give Mexico free access to the U.S.

But the ASA and other industry organizations are fighting Mexico's move on the basis Mexico has used subsidies to produce a massive surplus of sugar.
