The Department of Energy has awarded Amalgamated Research Inc. a $1.9 million grant.

Growers and processors may see relief from low prices as early as next year through cheaper processing. Amalgamated Research Inc., a company that contracts with the Amalgamated Sugar Company in Twin Falls, ID, has received a three-year $1.9 million grant from the Department of Energy.

The purpose of the grant is to stimulate the nations biobased products industry, but the research will also focus on cheaper and more efficient ways of separating components derived from sugarbeets. Researchers will focus on designing and manufacturing processing units that are smaller and more efficient than previous models.

Amalgamated will work with the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory. Researchers also will study methods to make ethanol production cheaper.
