A parliamentary committee in Australia has approved biotech crops and called for additional funding for ag biotechnology research.

Australia's food regulatory, Michael MacKeller, called for immediate approval of insect-protected corn, and herbicide-tolerant corn, cotton, canola, and soybeans.

"All scientific data indicate that the foods under assessment have all the benefits of the corresponding conventional foods and no additional risk," MacKellar stated.

The multi-party House of Representatives Committee on Primary Industries passed the measure with only one dissenting vote.
