Eleven North American potato production regions unanimously agreed to seek an additional 50-cent per cwt on 2001 processing contracts.

Meeting in Salt Lake City, UT, June 17, some 40 growers from throughout the United States and Canada agreed to jointly seek the 50 cents because of rising production costs.

The increase will be pursued via meetings with the corporate offices of all major North American processors.

The meeting concluded with the appointment of grower representatives for each major processor from the respective processing regions.

The group also agreed to review the current structure of the Potato Marketing Association of North America and appointed a committee to review by-laws and articles of the Association.

The PMANA was organized in 1973 to serve as an information resource to assist state and provincial growers with the dissemination of information for the purpose of bargaining and contract negotiations.
