Canada won the exclusive right to become the only country in the world allowed to export seed potatoes to China.

Canadian Agriculture Minister Lyle Vanclief announced the agreement during a trade mission in Beijing. The 14-day mission was to China and the Philippines.

The protocol not only opens the vast Chinese market to Canadian seed potatoes, but will lead to direct Canadian potato industry investments in China.

"This agreement sets the stage for a very promising future for Canadian seed potato producers," Vanclief said. "Canada is now the only country permitted to export seed to China and we will continue to push for increased market access."
