McCain Foods of New Brunswick, Canada, has made it public: it will no longer accept genetically modified potatoes.

McCain Foods, the world's largest food processor, has marketing channels all over the world and as such hits resistance to GMO from many fronts, especially Europe.

A spokesman said the decision was made for business reasons because customers are asking for GM-free potatoes.

It is estimated that between 5 to 10 percent of Canada's potato crop is genetically enhanced. Prince Edward Island has been a leader in genetic seed potato sales to many countries of the world.

Fear of market loss, has caused other United States potato processing companies to tell growers they will not take them either.
